Tupac’s sister, Takerra Allen, shares tales of her first and only phone conversation with her half brother Tupac Shakur and the memories she holds dear of her famous sibling…

A day doesn’t go by that Takerra Allen doesn’t think about her deceased brother, Tupac Shakur.

Allen, a budding author and Tupac’s younger half-sister who shares the same father (Billy Garland) as the rap legend, says every day, especially major holiday and family get together, is full of memories of ’Pac. Unfortunately, the New Jersey native never got a chance to meet her famous older half-brother, only holding onto recollections from one short conversation she had with ’Pac when he was incarcerated in Upstate New York in 1995, when she was only a child.

Here, Allen tells XXL about family resemblances to Tupac, how her first impression of him was through the movie Juice and writing her books. - Mark Lelinwalla

XXL: How do you think September 13, the 15th anniversary of Tupac’s passing, will be for your family?

Takerra Allen: It’s always bittersweet. It’s always good when I go on the Internet, radio, Facebook and people are playing his music and they’re talking about him every time his birthday or anniversary comes around. That’s the sweet part, but it’s also a deep thing knowing he’s gone and not coming back and knowing there hasn’t been no real closure to what happened to him. Every year that passes, it hurts my family a little more. We wish there would be some kind of justice, but it’s good to know that people still remember him and love him.

Your dad looks exactly like Tupac. Are there strong resemblances throughout the rest of the family?

My dad has strong genes. Sometimes we have family cookouts and we’re looking at my brother and it’s like seeing him. I flip out sometimes because if Tupac could have been here and seen my whole family, he would have flipped out to see how everyone looks just like him. It’s crazy.

How much is Tupac brought up when the family is together?

Oh, all the time. On our Fourth of July cookout, we played nothing but Tupac music. My dad was telling stories about him. We have a cousin that shares the same birthday (as Tupac), so we celebrate both their birthdays. This past June 16, our uncle passed on that day and it was such a raw, emotional day. It was crazy.

What do the rest of your siblings do?

My brother Landon is in Florida. I believe he works a very regular job with the cable. My brother Malik is an electrician. He’s in Jersey. My brother Billy is in Florida as well. He actually was incarcerated, but got out recently. He went to school to be a dental technician, I believe. My sister N’Neka, she lives in California. She’s my older sister. She actually looks like Tupac a lot and works for ABC, one of the soap operas. My brother Billy, he’s a spitting image (of Tupac) and his personality. Landon is also a spitting image, but you got to give it to Billy because of his mannerisms and everything. It’s crazy sometimes being around him.

So, you were one of how many children on your dad’s side?

My dad has six, so one of six. Three had the same mother and Tupac had his mom and my other brother had his mom. My dad always kept us close. He always made sure that everyone stayed like family and we all grew up knowing each other.

What was the age difference between Tupac and yourself?

In ’96 when he passed, he was 25 and I was 12, so we were 13 years apart.

How did you even first learn that Tupac was your brother?

It was actually when Juice came out back then. They had the advertisement for the movie in the newspaper and my dad came to me and my little brother and said, ‘I have to tell you guys something. This guy right here is your brother.’ He took us to see the movie and he was Bishop, so I was a little scared. Of course I thought he was young and wild and a little intimidating, but even being so young, I remember thinking he stole the show with so much charisma. I remember being glued to him and I don’t know if that’s because I knew he’s my brother. I remember focusing on him and not taking my eyes off him. He was that movie. It was spellbinding to watch him in that. I looked over at my dad and he was crying at the end. I guess it just touched him just seeing what he accomplished and then not seeing him in so long. Now that I’m older, I can watch and see so much talent in that movie, but back then, I was like, ‘He’s crazy!’ I was probably eight or nine years old in that movie.

What a way to be introduced to somebody!

(Laughs) A good thing about my dad is he never hid anything. He sat us down and told us the real deal about everything that happened and losing touch with Tupac and his mother. From my understanding, it took my dad a long time to track Afeni down and he wasn’t able to find him. One day he knew where they were and the next he didn’t. He grew up thinking someone else was his father.

Take me from that point on.

From that point on…forgive me, it’s blurry because I was young. But I remember every day after (watching Juice) we were playing his music. I knew all his songs. I was so touched by “Brenda’s Got a Baby.” I made my dad talk to me about certain things because of Tupac’s music. I remember my father telling me we were going to meet him one day and telling me about when he was younger and taking him to the movies. We watched his videos and interviews. I got in touch with him the same way most of the world did – through his art. I don’t think for me personally that the contact came until my dad started visiting him Upstate New York, when he went to jail. That was ’95 and I was 10 or 11.

How did your contact with him start?

I was in the living room one day and my dad gave me the phone and said, ‘Somebody wants to speak to you.’ I got on the phone with him and I was very shy at first because he was famous and I never spoke to him before. He told me this isn’t the place he wants me to meet him for the first time and that we would have our day to meet. He was just really cool. He was silly and goofy. I told him, ‘Daddy told me you cheated in Monopoly and you can’t dance’ and he said, ‘Yo, I ain’t cheat and I could dance!’ I remember telling him that nobody at school believed me that he was my brother. Tupac told me, “One day you’re not going to care what anybody says to you.” He told me to not believe stuff that I read about him. I think that was our only conversation and we had a couple letters that we shared. I also remember him telling me how he saw pictures of the family and we looked a lot like him and he can’t wait to meet us. I definitely hold onto that conversation.

But unfortunately you never met him?

I was supposed to meet him – I remember my dad told me – that we were all going to meet him Thanksgiving of ’96. We were really excited…and then that happened.

Where were you when the news of Pac’s death hit?

I was living with my mom in New Brunswick, New Jersey and my dad was living in Jersey City. When it happened, my dad went to Vegas. I thought it would be like the first time that he was shot. I thought it would be fine and we’re still going to meet him Thanksgiving. But I remember Friday the 13th and I was watching the Jason marathon and my dad called me. I just knew by his voice what had happened. I couldn’t believe it. That brief conversation and moment I had with him, that was going to be it.

How did you get into writing?

I started my first book when I was 17. It wasn’t meant to be a book. It was more of a personal thing that turned into a book. It’s funny because I recently wrote a couple chapters to a White Man’s World and said to myself that, ‘This song is touching so many people in such a short amount of time,’ and what I’d do is challenge myself to write like that. I challenge myself to get as deep as him.

... I just came from looking at amazon sales rank for our two published books, and all I can say is wow....

.. Ok so not only wow, but thank you. Angelic Script Publishing launched in July 2009, BUT we really didn't start getting out there into the field until December 2009, where I started reaching out to bookstores and distributors. Regardless of what some may say, Takerra Allen is such a talented writer, she's a breath of fresh air in this game. She's not just a pretty face, she's mean with that pen. When you mix that, with a lil crazy boriqua/ morena who doesn't really like the word "no", you get what I've just looked at right now... Both of Takerra's novels are selling extremely well!!! It's competing number wise with some of these veteran author's and all I can say is thanks to the many folk who told me "yes" and for giving Takerra's work a chance. Once you read it, it's like crack... your hooked... :-)

CALLING ALL MODELS! Urban Fiction Book Covers Casting Call! We are looking for 3-4 beautiful girls who will be picked by the publishing company for two different book covers. The author has been credited by the Urban Fiction World, previous novels are certified classic!

If interested please respond to this add with one head shot photo and one full body photo. (If possible send more) Along with this send measurements, weight, height, and contact info.
To get an idea of what we are looking for, here is a physical description of each character that we are casting.
Model 1 - deep to dark brown skinned, slim to voluptuous build, preferably long hair (extensions are acceptable).
Model 2 - light to medium brown skinned, slim build, hair length anywhere from chin length and longer.

Summer Summer Summer Time!!!

Alright so the weather's beginning to break { BUT it's not summertime yet } and I'm starting to see lots of people looking for authors to book them for signings. But you see, I've been scheduling Takerra for book signings all year round. We want to get that word out, that there's a new writer in town!!! lol Ok corny- but sooo what. I've booked Takerra thru May 2010 and despite the thought of how exhausted we'll be, that's a great thing!!!

... Heaven's Hell- It's OUT!!!! Officially released to the urban book stores and amazon as well as right here, our blog that your reading now... :-) On behalf of Angelic Script Publishing, I wanted to take this time to thank all of the book stores and readers who have been helping to spread the word of Ms.Takerra Allen and her sophmore novel. It's doing well, we can't complain!!

So in the near future you'll be seeing Takerra at signings along with myself and my #1 supporter- Kamani, my lil angel!!! ;-) You will see us out there pushing these novels.

What's up familia!!!! I haven't posted on here in a while- I've been extremely busy between my 9-5, the family, and our company Angelic Script Publishing. Well I have some exciting news coming up- sorry I can't share now :-) But stay tuned... :-)

I feel like getting a little personal with the readers, so here it goes.

Takerra and I met a couple of years ago and instantly became friends, we just clicked. We had soo many things in common and it was like we were sisters from another mother. At that time we were promoting events in Central Jersey along with other members of Heaven Inc. Some events turned out great and a couple were just alright but we continued grinding and making money. Most members parted ways with Heaven Inc due to all different circumstances but we still kept it moving - no hard feelings. { pause }

...Now fast forward to this year and we are still branding our company name- Heaven Inc... Angelic Script Publishing... Takerra and I are like the dynamic duo - she's great at banging out those great reads & being a creative barbie :-) and I'm great at running the company and getting ourselves exposure. Now Takerra and I have lots of things planned for the future I just hope that you all stay on this ride with us and see where we are in a couple of years because this is just the beginning baby!!! :-)

Sasha is single, 21 and sexy, with no kids and has her own apartment. Sasha is the type of girl that strives to look perfect under any circumstance. When she meets Chauncey, she falls for him hard. Unfortunately, Chauncey has a secret that threatens their relationship. So instead of talking with her, he just up and breaks things off with her, leaving her heartbroken and confused. Tatum is the girl that always has an eye for fashion. Tatum can put anything together and look fly wearing it. Unfortunately Tatum's only family consists of her brother, Chris, and his two little girls, whom Tatum seems to be raising. Her brother, Chris, is in the streets trying to make a name for himself, while Tatum is busy going to school trying to get an education. When Tatum meets the sexy Respect `aka' Ree, a notorious drug dealer, her loyalty will be tested. Penelope 'aka' Neli is the quiet one of the group. She is envious of another group member and is determined to be like her or have what she has at any cost. Neli will smile in her face but will plot behind her back. Unfortunately she is about to learn that if you do not have family the only one you can count on besides yourself is your friends. Kim is the wild child of the group. Kim has the attitude "if you got it flaunt it." She has only been in love one time and unfortunately, it was with someone older and off limits to her. Kim's philosophy is to "use men for what she can get out of them." Kim is the type of girl that will speak her mind and not sugar coat it. She could care less what you think of her. THICKER THAN WATER is an excellent debut. It is a tale of friendships, secrets, lies, envy, temptation and murder. Ms. Allen does a great job with character development and draws you into the story from the very first page. Only because of the minor editing issues did I knock off .5 stars. I sincerely look forward to reading more by this author. This book was provided to me courtesy of the author for review purposes.

Friendships and relationships are tested when a slew of uneventful activities come into play that may cause their lives to change forever.

"Thicker Than Water" is very entertaining and will have you on the edge of your seat. The drama was unbelievable and kept me glued to the very end. I was really excited when I read one of the characters with the same name as mine. The ending left me hanging and wanting more, but at the same time thrilled that there will be a part II. Ms. Allen has definitely got the literary game on lock.

Meet four friends with diverse lifestyles, personalities, and goals in life. They accept the good, the bad, and the ugly to stand together against all odds. Kim is the vocal one of the four with her ghetto mentality, yet despite the strength she exudes, she has a weakness for a married man. Neli is the weakest link and her insecurities play a major role as she secretly covets the possession of one of the quartet's most precious possessions. Sasha loves her friends as much as the love of her life, Chauncey, who seems to love the drug game more than her. While Tatum is the authentic diva with looks, luxury, confidence, and style, she's missing the love of a good man.
Tatum effortlessly steals the show with her encounter with the unforgettable Respect. Respect is a fascinating character that lures you in with his poetic quips and his sexy dialect; let's not even begin to mention his looks, power, attitude or prowess in sharing his love.
Thicker Than Water is an energetic read focusing on the relationships between four friends and the many ventures that they dare to encounter. Love, life, romance, jealousy, rivalry, deception, betrayal, and loyalty all flourish as the story line expands. This is my first Takerra Allen read, and I highly commend her on taking an age old plot and portraying it in an impressive and superbly written novel. Ms. Allen incorporates suspense and a tad of mystery to make this an even more pleasurable and intriguing tale. With better editing to correct the numerous errors, both spelling and grammatical, I have high hopes for the conclusion of this story line and anxiously await the sequel! Kudos Takerra...Kudos!

Sunday~ Heaven's Hell Day~

Photoshoot- oh yes!!! My day started at @ 8:30am with preparing things for the photoshoot. Tee and our model- Tara C got to my house at @ 11am for hair and makeup. At 1pm we were heading out the door on our way to the studio for the photoshoot!!!

We started with the back cover shoot, I mean Tara killed it, after about 20-30 takes we knew that we had the perfect pic!

On to that FRONT COVER, oh yeah I wish that I could give a sneak peak of the pictures but I can't!!!! ;-( It is soo razor. Man, I can't wait for the supporters- urban fiction readers to see that cover, I mean I want you to read it and love it as well but man- I can't wait to post that cover.

Weekend Re~Cap!!! Some Good and some BaD!!;-)

The weekend the weekend, oh boy the weekend. Alright well Takerra was supposed to do a signing at Makeda's in NB. But when we arrived the manager and promoter hadn't communicated because we were all confused. So after some frustration/aggravation we said f*ck it, went to Hotoke had a drink, chilled with some of the supporters { oh yeah the supporters emailed me while we were out and I let them know where they could meet us at Hotoke and get a signed copy of thicker than water}, and just enjoyed ourselves.

... Saturday was a run around day. Takerra and I went out to Newark, Jersey City, and Elizabeth... we dropped off some books for the local bookstores. Overall this day was a great day... Before I forget, we also had a little {in size not spirit} supporter KAMANI!!! Yes, my baby girl came out with us and once inside the bookstores she got her promoting on, Hey you want to buy a book, it's only $10!!! I love it! Later on that night we checked out Precious and that was a good movie, not sure why it gets the mixed reviews, but I enjoyed it...

... I have to give Sunday it's entire post....

Ok so Takerra went to a book signing yesterday in Nueva York!!!!

It all started off with the horrible train ride. After being semi frustrated with taking the trains and being pushed around with her big 'ol bag with the books, she finally found the right subways to take and yay she didn't end up in Queens. lol... She was at 116th & Lexington finally at about 12:30pm- Spanish Harlem baby!. Thanks to Maria & Sexy for looking out for us. I arrived later on about 3pm and we sold about 30 books!!! Yay for us. Tee is so excited about the response and love she received yesterday in Harlem- so this post was mainly to big up Harlem and Sexy & Maria- Thanks Ladies!!!!
